Hi, I’m Christian!

My name is Christian O’Brien. I am an aspiring game developer with a passion for virtual reality. I am looking to find my place in a team of creatives designing meaningful immersive experiences. VR offers so much potential, and I would love to contribute to the discussion of how best to apply the technology.

I am a problem solver. I am always looking for the best method of approaching and overcoming an obstacle, and streamlining processes to become more efficient. For my final bachelors project, I designed a workflow for motion tracking and camera solving from 360° video. For my master’s dissertation, I designed a data and scene management workflow for use in VR games. I am a quick learner, especially in regards to software and technology. Programming is fun for me, as I love the problem-solving aspect, and I’m always keen to learn a new language.

I earned my master’s degree in serious games and virtual reality at The Glasgow School of Art. I excelled in courses such as game design, game development, and even academic research. My dissertation explored the use of optical hand tracking in virtual reality to teach American Sign Language. As part of this project, I developed a game for the Oculus Quest which recognizes when the player produces sign for the letters of the alphabet. The game released to highly positive reviews. You can learn more about the game from the ASL Fingerspeller page on this website, or from my portfolio page.

In my personal life, I love sports, the outdoors, and video games. I have been a runner since I was 14, focused on middle and long distance. At university I picked up lacrosse. Lacrosse was an excellent opportunity to develop my ability to work in a team. During my time at Brunel, our team went from bottom of the league to challenging for the title due to our improvement in teamwork. Video games I enjoy include Pokemon, Rocket League, and Apex Legends. I’m always looking for new friends to play with!
